We are regular visitors to Leopold, much before the book came out. Always sit downstairs and not in the pub upstairs - thats the place with ambience. Order the pitcher of beer (one grouse, its no more true draught beer but Kingfisher these days). Have the pomfret fry. Indian is good too. So are all the various starters. All those who think its hyped, remember its a cafe (in the true sense) and not a restaurant. We ve never had an issue with service.
Authentic taste of bengali food. Particularly good are their mutton/chicken champ, biryani, fish fry. The paratha used to be very good - it was a lachcha paratha. They changed it to plain paratha but did not inform, although we were regular customers. We took a parcel home and discovered the change. When we called to inform, they were rather nonchalent about it. The thing that puts me off are the expressionless faces of the owners. Its such a cozy and intimate place. All they need to do is to be welcoming. It would make it the choice destination of Bengalis.
